Short description:

The lungs are a pair of spongy, cone-shaped organs located in the chest cavity, essential for respiration. They are responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air we breathe and the bloodstream.

Key Features:

  • Lobes: The right lung has three lobes (upper, middle, and lower), while the left lung has two lobes (upper and lower), allowing space for the heart.
  • Pleura: A double-layered membrane called the pleura surrounds each lung, providing protection and reducing friction during breathing.
  • Visceral Pleura: The inner layer attached to the lung surface.
  • Parietal Pleura: The outer layer attached to the chest wall and diaphragm.
  • Bronchi: The trachea (windpipe) divides into two main bronchi, one for each lung, which then branch into smaller bronchi and bronchioles within the lungs.
  • Alveoli: Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen passes through the alveolar walls into the blood, and carbon dioxide is expelled from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
  • Diaphragm: A dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs that contracts and relaxes to help draw air into and out of the lungs.
