Short description:
The brain is a complex organ with several key regions, each responsible for different functions:
- Cerebrum:
- Frontal Lobe: Decision-making, problem-solving, voluntary movements, and speech production.
- Parietal Lobe: Sensory processing (touch, temperature, pain) and spatial orientation.
- Temporal Lobe: Auditory processing, memory, and speech.
- Occipital Lobe: Visual processing.
- Cerebellum: Coordination, balance, and fine-tuning of movements.
- Diencephalon:
- Thalamus: Sensory and motor signal relay.
- Hypothalamus: Autonomic functions (temperature, hunger, thirst, circadian rhythms) and hormone regulation.
- Brainstem:
- Midbrain: Vision, hearing, motor control, sleep, arousal, temperature regulation.
- Pons: Communication between cerebrum and cerebellum, sleep, and respiration.
- Medulla Oblongata: Autonomic functions (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure).
- Limbic System:
- Amygdala: Emotional processing and memory.
- Hippocampus: Memory formation and spatial navigation.
- Cingulate Gyrus: Emotion, learning, and memory.
Additional important structures include the corpus callosum (connects the brain's hemispheres), basal ganglia (regulates movements and routines), pituitary gland (hormone regulation), and ventricles (cavities with cerebrospinal fluid). The brain is protected by the meninges (three layers of tissue) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
